Rascal Flats is my all time favorite country band. The combination of the lead vocals, the harmonies, and the music are unique and beautiful. The vocals of Gary LoVox are unmistakable. The background vocals of Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney are melodic and harmonious not to mention their expert musicianship. Rascal Flatts is three talented guys who blazed their own path through country music. Their rise to the top of the charts came rather quickly with their debut single, Prayin’ For Daylight, reaching #3 on the Billboard Country Charts.
Rascal Flatts released eight studio albums producing 26 singles the peaked in the Top 20 on the Country Charts. Of those 26 singles, almost half (12) have reach
ed number one. I love every Rascal Flatts song but two are my favorites are “Mayberry” and “Skin.” I love the carefree, simple feeling of Mayberry. I sometimes wish we could go back to the days of a dad walking on a dirt road with his son carrying fishing poles. I would sit on the front porch with my ice-cold Mt. Dew watching the clouds roll by.
“Skin” is a tear jerker song about a young woman with cancer who loses her hair before her prom and the heart warming gesture of her date shaving his own head. This touching song makes me bawl like a baby every time I hear it. Just thinking about that song while writing this has given me goose bumps.
Rascal Flatts seems like they are the perfect all-american boys next door. Their songs have a heart and are not afraid to show it. Their songs are happy, fun, and wistful like “Mayberry” and “Fast Cars and Freedom.” Other songs are inspiring, “God Bless the Broken Road” while still others are heart wrenching such as “Skin.” Just what every country girl wants. What a shame they are all happily married.
Not only are these three guys the most talented and the most popular in country music, they are caring and giving human beings. “Committed to giving back, they are known for charitable work, which includes raising three million dollars for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville. It’s something close to all of their hearts.” (rascalflatts.com, 2013).
